The ethics of nose surgery in the age of social media
Within the field of facial surgery, nose surgery, rhinoplasty, or 'nose jobs' are the number one procedure. They can be carried out for aesthetic or functional reasons, and sometimes both. The surgery is delicate, as the nose plays a vital role in delivering oxygen to the lower airways; however, aesthetics are also important, since the nose is situated at the center of the face.
The procedure can alter the size, shape, and overall appearance of the nose, potentially improving symmetry and facial harmony. However, given the exponential rise in social media recommending nasal procedures, endorsing particular surgeons or clinics, it's more important than ever that surgeons are aware of the ethical considerations before the scalpel touches skin.
EUFOREA invites 2 internationally renowned experts in the Rhinoplasty field to tell us more about the ethics of nose surgery:
- Professor Enrico Robotti (Italy) - Past President of the Italian Society of Plastic Surgery, Past President of the Rhinoplasty Society of Europe, and Former Chief of Plastic Surgery, Ospedale Papa Giovanni XXIII, Bergamo.
- Professor Alwyn D'Souza (UK) - Professor of Aesthetic Facial Surgery in London, Editor of the Facial Plastic Surgery Journal, Past President of the European academy of facial plastic surgery (EAFPS.org), and past President of Facial Plastic Surgery UK (FPSUK.org).
