Common mistakes to avoid
A few simple mistakes can make a nasal spray less effective or increase irritation.
- Don't aim the spray towards the middle of your nose (the septum). Aim slightly outwards, towards the ear on the same side.
- Don't sniff hard after spraying. Breathe in gently through your nose so the medicine stays in the nasal passages rather than running into your throat.
- Don't tilt your head backwards. Keep your head slightly forward.
- Don't blow your nose immediately after using the spray. Give the medicine time to remain in your nose.
- Don't use more sprays than recommended. Follow the instructions for your specific medicine.
